I've always loved pants...but I was born with a black thumb instead of a green one. I am, to be polite, a plant killer. I can plant plants in the yard...and let nature take care of them and they survive wonderfully. My dad says they survive on my neglect. But, if I have a potted plant it invariably dies...usually rather spectacularly. My dad has a magic touch with plants and flowers...and many times he cannot even save them after I have had my hands on them. It has been a source of sadness in my life.
But this year, I have decided that I will try to take care of a cactus...a plant that is notoriously hardy and lives, in nature, in very challenging environments...so, hopefully this means that I won't kill it. My dad has warned me to make sure I don't over water it.
To further my dream of having a plant live under my care I bought a cactus terrarium kit. Actually I bought two...one for me and one for my dad...that way I had a "control" cactus (this way, if his cactus died too I would be able to say it wasn't me...not that I am planning on my cactus dying...)

| Here is the cactus kit that I purchased (it also came with instructions on how to set it up and care for it) |
I set my dad's kit up first...and it was pretty quick to do, and turned out wonderful...it looked so natural! He loved it of course and it is currently hanging near his desk at work...so he has a bit of green to break up all
the computer and electronic stuff about his desk! i was really proud of how nice it came out.

| Dad's cactus kit put together. |
| Now, Dad's came out looking very nice, and very natural...but,as cute as it was...I thought it would be wonderful if it was more decorative...of course. So, I decorated the cactus's home as if it was mine. Because who doesn't want purple sand and carved blue sodalite coins surrounding them? If I were a cactus I would. I think it turned out super fantastic! Very happy and bright looking. I was going to keep it in my room, however, Simon took a liking to the cactus and spent much of the first day I had it trying to get into the globe and eat it. Very bizarre behavior to say the least, and probably not a good plan for my cat or the cactus. So, I have also taken my cactus to work with me. And it is a bright happy spot on my desk. Not sure we can say that this is "crafting" but it is adding an artistic touch to an item that might otherwise be dull (not that being natural is dull...but, well, what can I say...I want the cactus to look natural while it sits in an environment that doesn't look natural.) Happy crafting, Seckmea | ![]() | ||||||||
